When data goes missing, you need to contact experts right away. Do not use $20 'utilities' to try to recover the files, and do not try to move or copy files from one place to another after the data goes missing. At the point where data disappears, it is usually not too late to get it back, but the events immediately following data loss can significantly affect your chances.
Several procedures are used to recover data from the damaged device.
- The first procedure is to try to get all of the data from the drive onto another drive, using special software (not Windows software) that does not write to the drive or attempt to make any changes to the surface of the drive.
- If the first procedure does not work, then we may replace the electronic circuitry in the drive with known-to-be-working circuitry, and re-attempt the first procedure.
- If the first and second procedures do not work, then we remove the platters and place them into a special environment, and re-attempt the first procedure from this environment.
- If any of the earlier procedures were successful, then we use special recovery software that analyzes the image of the drive, and recovers as much as possible.
